The sky versus the zodiac

In short

Western astrology's twelve signs are equal 30-degree slices of the sky tied to the seasons, not the constellations they are named after. Because Earth's axis slowly wobbles (precession), the signs and constellations have drifted roughly a month apart over two thousand years. Controlled studies have not found that signs predict personality.

Look up the night your horoscope says the Sun is "in Aries" and you won't find the Sun among the stars of Aries at all. That isn't a mistake. It's the difference between a sign and a constellation.

Signs are not constellations

  • A constellation is a region of the sky defined by astronomers. The 88 official constellations have irregular boundaries and different sizes.
  • A zodiac sign in Western (tropical) astrology is an equal 30-degree segment of the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent yearly path, measured from the point where the Sun sits at the March equinox.

The signs borrowed the names of the constellations that lined up with them about two thousand years ago.

Precession: why they drifted apart

Earth's axis slowly traces a circle, like a spinning top, over about 26,000 years. This precession moves the position of the equinoxes against the background stars by about one degree every 72 years. Over roughly two millennia, that adds up to nearly a full sign.

Tropical zodiac (Western astrology) Sidereal zodiac (used in Vedic astrology)
Anchored to The seasons (March equinox) The background stars
Effect of precession Signs stay with the seasons Signs stay with the constellations
Typical difference today Reference point About 24 degrees, close to a sign, behind

So a person who is an Aries in the tropical system is often a Pisces in the sidereal system.

Ophiuchus, the "thirteenth sign"

The ecliptic passes through 13 constellations, including Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer, which the Sun crosses in late November and early December. Because tropical astrology uses equal signs rather than constellations, it doesn't include Ophiuchus. When this "news" resurfaces every few years, nothing about the sky has changed.

What does the evidence say?

Researchers have tested astrology's claims many times. A well-known double-blind study by physicist Shawn Carlson, published in Nature in 1985, found that astrologers could not match birth charts to personality profiles better than chance. Later studies have generally reached similar conclusions. Cusp Me treats astrology as culture and storytelling, not as a way to predict personality or events.

Watching the real sky

You can still connect your birthday to the sky. The constellation opposite the Sun is the one high in the sky around midnight, so for most of the zodiac you can see "your" constellation about six months after your birthday.
