The twelve cusps and their nicknames
In short
There are twelve cusps, one at each boundary between zodiac signs. Popular astrology gives each a nickname, such as the Cusp of Power (Aries-Taurus) or the Cusp of Magic (Gemini-Cancer), and describes cusp-born people as blending the two neighbouring signs. These descriptions are folklore rather than evidence-based.
Every zodiac sign has two neighbours, so there are twelve cusps in a year. The nicknames below became widespread through twentieth-century popular astrology books and are now repeated across many astrology websites. Treat them as storytelling.

How popular astrology describes the pairings
These summaries reflect how the cusps are commonly described, not tested personality findings.
- Seasonal turning points. Four cusps fall near the equinoxes and solstices: Pisces-Aries (March), Gemini-Cancer (June), Virgo-Libra (September), and Sagittarius-Capricorn (December). Astrologers often describe these as cusps of change and new beginnings.
- Fire meets earth (Aries-Taurus, Leo-Virgo, Sagittarius-Capricorn): described as pairing drive with practicality.
- Earth meets air (Taurus-Gemini, Virgo-Libra, Capricorn-Aquarius): described as grounded sense meeting curiosity.
- Air meets water (Gemini-Cancer, Libra-Scorpio, Aquarius-Pisces): described as ideas meeting feeling.
- Water meets fire (Cancer-Leo, Scorpio-Sagittarius, Pisces-Aries): described as emotion meeting boldness.
Why the nicknames stuck
Nicknames are memorable and give people a story about themselves, which is much of astrology's appeal. They also highlight a real experience: people born near a boundary often see two different signs listed for their birthday, and want to know which applies.
Limitations
The nicknames are not used by every astrologer, and some reject cusps entirely. No scientific study has shown that cusp birthdays shape personality. For the astronomy, read The sky versus the zodiac; for the basics, What is a cusp?.
