What is a cusp in astrology?

In short

In astrology a cusp is the boundary where one zodiac sign ends and the next begins. People born within a few days of that boundary are often described as "born on the cusp". Because the Sun's entry into each sign shifts by about a day from year to year, your exact sun sign near a boundary depends on your birth year, time, and place.

Astrology divides the year into twelve signs, each linked to a period of roughly 30 days. The dates you see on horoscope pages, such as "Aries: March 21 to April 19", are conventions. A cusp is where two of those periods meet.

What does "born on the cusp" mean?

Someone born in the last few days of one sign or the first few days of the next is often called a cusp baby. In popular astrology, they are sometimes said to show traits of both signs. For example, a person born on April 19 might be described as having both Aries drive and Taurus steadiness.

Astrologers disagree about this. Many say you have one sun sign, full stop, and that other parts of a birth chart (the Moon, the rising sign, and the planets) explain the mix of traits people see. Others find the cusp idea a useful shorthand. Cusp Me describes both views.

Why do the dates move?

The zodiac used in Western astrology is tied to the Sun's apparent path through the sky, starting with the March equinox. The moment the Sun crosses each 30-degree boundary, called an ingress, happens at a slightly different date and time each year because:

  1. The calendar doesn't match the solar year exactly. A solar year is about 365.24 days, so ingress times drift by roughly six hours a year and jump back in leap years.
  2. Time zones. An ingress at 11 pm in New York is the next day in London.
  3. Rounding. Websites list whole days, but the change happens at a specific minute.

The result: the Sun might enter Aries on March 20 one year and March 21 the next.

How wide is a cusp?

There's no standard. Cusp Me uses a window that runs from three days before a sign's conventional start date to two days after it. The cusp finder shows the window for every cusp.

Born... What it means here
More than 3 days before a sign change Firmly in the earlier sign
3 days before to 2 days after On the cusp
More than 2 days after Firmly in the later sign

How to know your sun sign for certain

If you were born on a cusp and want a definite answer, you need:

  • your birth date and year,
  • your birth time, as precisely as possible, and
  • your birth place, for the time zone.

With those, an ephemeris (a table of planetary positions) or birth chart software can show which side of the line the Sun was on.

A note on evidence

Astrology is a cultural tradition, not a science. Studies have not found that sun signs predict personality. Enjoy cusps as folklore; see The sky versus the zodiac for what is happening overhead. For each cusp's nickname, read The twelve cusps.
